This movement is based on maqam Bayati
(quarternote-scale) and starts with Welcome
the World of Shahrazad & Dinarzad, a
picture of the Middle East where the wondrous
stories are taking place.
After that Turid Guldin sings King Shahriyar's
Song for Shahrazad. The lyrics are a love
by the Persian national poet Hafiz: A Potted
Plant translated by Daniel Ladinsky.
Dance of the Djinns is an orchestral piece
strong references to Duke Ellington's &
Tizol's "Caravan", displaying the energy
power of the large orchestra with exotic
by Maher Mahmoud and Moslem Rahal.
The Lovesong of Sitt al-Husn & Badr
Hassan is based on maqam narrow Hijazkar,
which is a tone poem based on one of
many beautiful love stories from 1001 Arabian
Nights with Jehad Jazbeh´s colourful violin
the leading instrument. The ending is a reprisal
of King Shahriyar's Song for Shahrazad.

I pull a sun from my coin purse each day.
And at night I let my pet the moon
Run freely into the sky meadow.
If I whistled,
She would turn her head and look at me.
If I then waved my arms,
She would come back wagging a marvelous tail
Of stars.
There are always a few men like me
In this world
Who are house-sitting for God.
We share His royal duties:
I water each day a favorite potted plant
Of His--
This earth.
Ask the Friend for love.
Ask Him again.
For I have learned that every heart will get
What it prays for
